I've just made a very interesting visit to Rossall School in Lancashire, up the Fylde coast beyond Blackpool. Embedded in the school is an International Piano Academy most ably led by Victor Lim. In front of a whole school assembly, some of these very talented students performed what I consider to be the "world premiere" of my recent piano collection Some Simple Sonatas; followed by a whole school (c800 people) performance of My Guardian Angel directed by Rossall's Headmaster, Jeremy Quartermain, himself an experienced choral singer. Amazing!
Nearby Fleetwood, where I stayed, is another of those extraordinary English locations I would never have seen were it not for these gracious invitations from schools. Perched on the edge of the Irish Sea, it overlooks a huge bay over which Cumbria and the Lake District is visible. (My picture shows one of the town's three lighthouses). It was also fantastic to be able to travel from the door of my hotel to the gates of the school via the Blackpool tram.
